Quick & Easy Calzone Recipe

A calzone means “trouser” or “trouser leg” in Italian , Strange but it is basically just a turnover of a pizza which can be made small as appetizers for two people or in large proportions as a meal for several people . It originates from Naples , ,a big city in southern Italy which is renowned for its distinctive style of the now “famous” thin-crust pizza. Calzones are sometimes known as hot pockets and they can be baked or fried. A typical calzone contains the same fillings you would add on a pizza but in this recipe , I’ve changed things up by making my own version of a sausage filling for more flavor. The dough recipe for the calzone and pizza are same ( YESSS) . And the best part , you can throw in your calzone in the freezer as long as you like and just pull it out whenever you need to make a quick and yummy dinner or breakfast ūüėČ

WHAT YOU NEED: ( serves 6 people)

For the dough:

  1. 1 packet instant dry yeast = 1 tablespoon
  2. 1 tablespoon olive oil
  3. 3/4 cup of water
  4. 1/4 cup of milk
  5. 2 cups of all purpose flour
  6. 1 pinch sugar
  7. 1 pinch salt
  8. One egg beaten for coating

For the filling:

  1. 2  onion chopped
  2. 1  tomato
  3. Grated mozzarella cheese
  4. 6 tablespoons of tomato sauce
  5. Salt as required
  6. Oregano flakes for seasoning
  7. 2 packets of hot dogs or sausage
  8. 2 teaspoon of Chili powder (as required) I like it spicy !
  9. A pinch of Coriander powder
  10. 1 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  11. 2 green chili

And here is the pictorial …..

For the dough

Mix the yeast , oil ,water and milk together and allow it to rest for about 5 mins. Then add the flour and mix. I used a stand mixer.

Once the dough is thoroughly mixed , Wrap it with a wet cloth or I just like to wrap it with aluminum foil , works the same !

And for the filling…

Chop the tomatoes , green chili and the onion.

Sautée the onion , add a little salt as the salt draws out the water and makes your job easier.

Add in the tomatoes and green chili and cook for a minute . Add the ginger garlic and coriander powder on a low flame so you don’t burn off the spices. Cook for 2 minutes. To this add the boiled and chopped sausages.

Now add the tomato sauce for the tangy flavor and the chili powder for some heat. Make sure to cook for a while to get rid of the raw chili smell from your filling.Taste and add salt as required.

Place the filling on the rolled out dough and generously sprinkle over mozzarella cheese. I also sprinkled some extra salt and some dried oregnano.

To close the pocket , mix in some flour and water to make a thick paste and apply to the seams to stick them together. You can also crimp the sides with a fork to seal and make it look a little more attractive.

Brush the dough with water before putting in the oven as this will prevent the top from becoming hard. I do this with every dough product . It really keeps the buns , and pastry soft ! Bake at 230 Celsius for 15 mins .

After the first 15 mins in the oven , pull it out and give it a coating of egg to give it a nice golden baked look. I also threw on some sesame seeds. Loove ¬†them ! Bake it for 5 more mins and you’re calzone is DONE !¬†

The whole recipe just takes about 30 mins including the preparation time. So easy to make and so delicious ! Enjoy your calzone hot hot with some ketchup. This recipe serves 6 people. You can halve the recipe for a smaller group or  double it for a larger group . Do try and let me know in the comments below !
