Spice Up Your Hot Chocolate – 5 different ways! Winter series.

Hot cocoa, drinking chocolate or cocoa, most commonly known as hot chocolate. The first chocolate beverage is believed to have been created by the Aztecs around 2,000 years ago, and a cocoa beverage was an essential part of Aztec culture by 1400 AD. Until the 19th century, hot chocolate was even used medicinally to treat ailments such as liver and stomach diseases. Today, hot chocolate is consumed throughout the world and comes in multiple variations. (Source: Wikipedia)

Let’s start with a really basic master recipe for Hot chocolate :

You will need:

  • 2 cups of fresh milk
  • 1/3 cup of semi sweetened chocolate chips (optional: for a more creamy sweet hot choco)
  • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder or drinking chocolate
  • Brown sugar ( if its not sweet enough for you, i love it sweet !)
  • Original coffee creamer (YES!)

So this recipe serves 2 people a warm cup of hot chocolate !

Method: Just heat your milk in a container and boil it. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the flame and  add the cocoa powder, creamer and chocolate chips. Whisk it until frothy and keep it warm.

For this recipe , you will need chai spice powder. I made mine at home with the spices available at home. It works just as great as any store bought powder.

You will need:

  •  1 star anise
  • A few pepper corns
  • 1 cinnamon sticks
  • A few cardommon peices (about 5 )
  • A pinch of nutmeg

Grind it into a fine powder and this is enough for making this hot chocolate twice.

Add a teaspoon of this chai spice to your master recipe for simple chai flavour or brew a strong chai tea and substitute it for milk in the master recipe  ! Thats it !

Add two teaspoons of your favourite coffee to the master recipe and whisk it until frothy. Top it off with some whipped cream. I added some cinnamon too.

Add 2 teaspoon of salted caramel syrup to the master recipe and skip the chocolate chips. I also used the caramel coffee creamer instead of the original one for an added caramel flavour.

Salted caramel syrup:

  • 1 cup of sugar
  •  butter ( 50 grams )
  •  I cup of thick cream

Melt the sugar in a pan. Do not stir it while its melting or you wont get a smooth syrup. Once its completely melted, reduce the flame to low and add the butter and stir. Once he butter is melted  , remove from heat and add the cream and stir nicely.

Serves: 2

  • 1/2 White chocolate chips
  • 2 cups of milk
  • Creamer
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt

Boil the milk and add the chocolate chips and creamer to it. Whisk nicely. Reduce the flame and add the salt and vanilla extract. Serve warm!

Hands down ,this is my favourite way to have hot chocolate! You can call me weird but I like having cold things when its cold outside ! So i love milkshakes and I love hot chocolate , what better way than to put them both together. Brilliant !

Make the master recipe minus the creamer.Freeze it for 30 mins. Add the hot chocolate with 2 scoops of  vanilla ice cream and blend it. Simple as that !

And thats it ! These are all simple recipes that can be made at home without any fancy machines or ingredients. There is a recipe in here for everyone. I hope you all like it!
